Internet Safety Guides For Kids

Normal safeguards and safety practices are not always sufficient when a child uses your computer. The natural characteristics of children: their innocence, curiosity, need for independence and fear of punishment, present them with additional challenges. When deciding how to safeguard your child and data, you should consider their characteristics.

It may seem that the child can do no harm because they are only playing games, researching for a paper or doing a home assignment. What if the child accidentally deletes an important program when they save their work? What if the child unintentionally visits a web site that contains a virus or malicious code? This is just one of two scenarios. Children may make mistakes, but they may not be aware of what they did or they may refuse to tell you because they are afraid to get punished.

Internet predators are another serious threat to children. It is very easy to manipulate and trick others on the Internet because it’s anonymous. (See Avoiding Phishing and Social Engineering Attacks as an example). These ploys are often used to trick adults, but children are also easy targets. Cyberbullying is another growing issue. Cyberbullying is a growing problem.
